Tetanus Antitoxin provides immediate, short-term passive immunity to help prevent and treat tetanus in animals. It is recommended for non-immunized animals or those with unknown immune status following deep, penetrating wounds that may be contaminated with soil. It may also be used after castration, docking, or other procedures in settings where tetanus has been a problem. Tetanus is caused by a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani, a bacterium that grows in damaged or dead tissue. This antitoxin is prepared from the blood of specifically hyperimmunized horses. Passive immunity is reported to last approximately 7–14 days.

Features:

Dosage and Administration:

• Before use: Shake well.
• Prevention: Cattle, swine, and sheep: 1,500 units intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SQ).
• Treatment:
  • Cattle: 10,000–25,000 units.
  • Sheep and swine: 5,000–12,500 units.
• Goats: According to the supplied Colorado Serum guidance, use one 1,500-unit vial per goat for prevention, regardless of size or age. Treatment may require three times or more the preventive amount; consult a veterinarian for dosing.
• Use the entire contents when first opened. Do not mix with other products.

Vaccination Information:

Tetanus toxoid vaccination is recommended to establish active immunity in healthy animals. Antitoxin provides temporary passive protection and does not replace an appropriate vaccination program. Consult a veterinarian for vaccination recommendations.

Storage:

Refrigerate at 2–8°C (35.6–46.4°F). Do not freeze.

Cautions and Warnings:

• Not for use in equine species. 
• Allergic reactions: Anaphylactoid reactions may occur due to sensitivity to equine serum proteins. If a reaction occurs, administer epinephrine (adrenaline) or equivalent treatment as directed by a veterinarian.
• Pregnancy: Safety in pregnant animals is unknown.
• Slaughter withdrawal: Verify the applicable withdrawal period on the current product label.
• Veterinary guidance: Consult a veterinarian for use and treatment recommendations. In case of human exposure, consult a physician.
