Rx ProZinc® U-40 Insulin for Dogs & Cats
ProZinc® (protamine zinc recombinant human insulin) is a prescription insulin suspension used to help manage diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs. It helps reduce elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and associated clinical signs, including increased thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss. ProZinc is made using recombinant technology and provides an extended duration of insulin activity to support blood glucose control between injections. It is administered by subcutaneous injection using a U-40 insulin syringe. The dosage and frequency must be individualized and adjusted by a veterinarian based on the animal's response and blood glucose monitoring.

Active Ingredient:

Ingredients:
Insulin, protamine sulfate, zinc oxide, glycerin, dibasic sodium phosphate heptahydrate, phenol (preservative), hydrochloric acid, and water for injection.
Directions:
For subcutaneous injection only. Do not shake or agitate the vial. Gently roll the vial before withdrawing each dose until the suspension appears uniformly white and cloudy. Do not use if clumps or visible white particles remain after gently rolling. Use only a U-40 insulin syringe. Administer subcutaneously (SC) in the back of the neck or along the side of the animal. Give the injection with or immediately after a meal. **Important:** Using any syringe other than a U-40 insulin syringe will result in incorrect dosing.
Dosage & Administration:
Follow the veterinarian's prescribed dosage and monitoring schedule. Initial recommendations are:
Cats:
- Starting dose: 0.1–0.3 IU per pound of body weight (0.2–0.7 IU/kg) every 12 hours.
- Give with or immediately after a meal.
- The veterinarian should monitor blood glucose and clinical signs and adjust the dose as needed.
Dogs:
- Starting dose: 0.2–0.5 IU per pound of body weight (0.5–1.0 IU/kg) once daily.
- For dogs new to insulin therapy, the lower end of the starting dose range is recommended.
- Give with or immediately after a meal.
- If once-daily dosing does not provide adequate duration of blood glucose control, a veterinarian may consider twice-daily administration with careful monitoring and dose adjustment.
Dosage changes may be necessary due to changes in diet, body weight, other medications, or concurrent illness. Never adjust insulin dosage or frequency without veterinary guidance.

Hypoglycemia: Excess insulin can cause dangerously low blood glucose, which may result in seizures, severe complications, or death. Monitor carefully for signs of low or high blood glucose.

Common adverse reactions: Reported reactions include lethargy, decreased appetite, hypoglycemia, vomiting, seizures, shaking (dogs), diarrhea, and loss of coordination (ataxia). Several of these reactions may be associated with hypoglycemia.

Contraindications: Do not use during episodes of hypoglycemia or in animals with known sensitivity to protamine zinc recombinant human insulin or any product ingredient.

Other medications: Glucocorticoids and progestogens may reduce insulin effectiveness and should be avoided when possible.

Special populations: Safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated in puppies, kittens, or breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals.

Unstable patients: Animals with severe diabetic ketoacidosis, anorexia, lethargy, or vomiting may require stabilization with short-acting insulin and supportive treatment before beginning ProZinc.

Accidental injection: May cause hypoglycemia. Seek medical attention immediately following accidental human injection.

Eye contact: Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, flush with running water for at least 15 minutes.

Allergic reactions: Exposure may cause local or systemic allergic reactions in sensitized individuals.

Species restriction: For use in cats and dogs only. Keep out of reach of children.
Withdrawal Period:
Not applicable. For use in cats and dogs only.
Storage:
Store upright under refrigeration at 36–46°F (2–8°C). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Use within 60 days after first puncture.
