Rx Oxytocin Injection, 100 mL

Oxytocin Injection is a prescription hormonal agent supplied as a sterile aqueous solution containing 20 USP units of oxytocin per mL. For veterinary use only, it helps stimulate uterine contractions during labor and promotes milk let-down in animals when the mammary gland is in the appropriate physiological state. It may also be used under veterinary supervision to assist with postpartum uterine evacuation and management of uterine hemorrhage.

Features:

  • Active Ingredient: Oxytocin, 20 USP units per mL.
  • Hormonal Action: Stimulates uterine smooth muscle contractions and milk let-down.
  • Obstetrical Use: Aids in initiating or accelerating labor and supporting postpartum uterine contraction.
  • Multiple Administration Routes: May be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously as directed by a veterinarian.
  • Form: Sterile aqueous solution.
  • Package Size: 100 mL vial.

Indications:

  • Labor Support: Helps initiate or accelerate uterine contractions when clinically appropriate.
  • Postpartum Uterine Management: Aids in evacuating uterine debris after delivery.
  • Post-Cesarean Contraction: Supports uterine contraction following cesarean section.
  • Uterine Hemorrhage: May be used under veterinary supervision to help control uterine bleeding.
  • Milk Let-Down: Stimulates contraction of mammary gland smooth muscle to promote milk release.

Dosage and Administration:

Administer aseptically by intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection according to veterinary direction. The following are the recommended doses provided for the product; a veterinarian should determine the appropriate dose, route, and whether a repeat dose is warranted.

Obstetrical Use

Species Volume Oxytocin Dose
Ewes and sows 1.5–2.5 mL 30–50 USP units
Cows and horses 5 mL 100 USP units

Doses may be repeated only as indicated by a veterinarian.

Milk Let-Down

Species Volume Oxytocin Dose
Cows 0.5–1 mL 10–20 USP units
Sows 0.25–1 mL 5–20 USP units

Doses may be repeated as necessary under veterinary direction.

Precautions:

  • Potent Hormonal Agent: Oxytocin has a strong effect on uterine muscle and must be administered with caution.
  • Cervical Dilation: Before use to induce or assist labor, full cervical dilation must be achieved naturally or through appropriate veterinary management. Administration before adequate dilation may cause serious complications.
  • Veterinary Supervision: A veterinarian should assess the animal's condition and determine whether oxytocin is appropriate before administration.
