Rx Amoxicillin for Dogs and Cats

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic prescribed by veterinarians to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It may be used in dogs and cats for infections involving the skin, ears, urinary tract, respiratory system, bladder, and mouth or teeth.

Directions:

Give exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Complete the full course of treatment, even if your pet appears to be feeling better. Do not skip doses or stop treatment early unless directed by your veterinarian.

Dogs and cats generally receive amoxicillin orally once or twice daily, depending on the condition being treated and your veterinarian's prescribed dosage.

If a dose is missed, give it when remembered unless it is close to the time for the next dose. Do not give two doses at once.

Storage:

Store tablets at room temperature in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container. Keep away from children and other animals. Liquid formulations should be shaken well, refrigerated, and discarded after 14 days.

Possible Side Effects:

Amoxicillin is generally well tolerated by dogs and cats. Possible side effects include decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Giving the medication with food may help reduce digestive upset.

Cautions/Warnings:

Do not use in animals with a known allergy or serious sensitivity to penicillin antibiotics without veterinary guidance. Tell your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and foods your pet is currently receiving before starting treatment, as drug interactions may occur.

Oral amoxicillin is not recommended for horses because it can cause severe diarrhea, which may lead to colic or death. Rabbits can also develop severe diarrhea from oral antibiotics and should not receive oral antibiotics unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.
