Rx Albon 5% Oral Suspension

Albon 5% Oral Suspension is a prescription sulfonamide antibiotic containing sulfadimethoxine for dogs and cats. It is used to treat respiratory, urinary and reproductive tract, intestinal, and soft tissue infections caused by sulfadimethoxine-sensitive bacteria. In dogs, it is also indicated for bacterial enteritis associated with coccidiosis.

Indications:

Albon 5% Oral Suspension is indicated for susceptible bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory Infections: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
  • Genitourinary and Reproductive Infections: Cystitis, nephritis, metritis, and pyometra.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Pustular dermatitis, anal gland infections, abscesses, and wound infections.
  • Intestinal Infections: Bacterial enteritis and canine salmonellosis.
  • Coccidiosis-Associated Enteritis: Bacterial enteritis associated with coccidiosis in dogs.

Listed infections must be caused by organisms susceptible to sulfadimethoxine, including certain strains of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Shigella.

Dosage and Administration:

Administer orally according to the veterinarian's instructions and the product label.

  • Initial Dose: 25 mg/lb (55 mg/kg) of body weight.
  • Subsequent Daily Doses: 12.5 mg/lb (27.5 mg/kg) every 24 hours.

For the 5% oral suspension, the labeled dosing guide is 1 teaspoon (5 mL) per 10 lb of body weight initially, followed by 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) per 10 lb every 24 hours.

Treatment Duration: Treatment commonly lasts 3–5 days, depending on the animal's clinical response. The supplied directions state that treatment should continue until the animal has been free of symptoms for 48 hours. Follow the current product label and your veterinarian's instructions for the appropriate duration.

Alternative Initial Treatment: Albon Injection 40% may be used by a veterinarian when rapid achievement of effective blood levels is needed or oral treatment is difficult.

Precautions:

  • Water Intake: Ensure the animal maintains adequate water intake throughout treatment.
  • Response to Treatment: If there is no improvement within 2–3 days, the diagnosis and treatment plan should be reassessed by a veterinarian.
  • Veterinary Guidance: Use only as prescribed. Do not change the dose or discontinue treatment without veterinary guidance.
