How do you measure boots for horses?

Horse boots are measured primarily by the cannon bone circumference, which you get by wrapping a soft tape around the widest part of the cannon bone just below the knee or hock. You may also need the fetlock circumference for boots that extend over the fetlock, and the cannon bone height (from the top of the fetlock to just below the knee) for taller boots or wraps.

How should boots fit on a horse?

A properly fitted horse boot should feel snug but not tight — you should be able to slide one or two fingers under the straps, but the boot shouldn't shift or rotate when the horse moves. It should sit flush against the leg with no gaps, pinching, or wrinkles in the lining, as these can cause rubs and pressure sores.

The boot should cover the intended area fully — typically protecting the cannon bone, fetlock, and any other structures it's designed for — without sitting too high into the knee or hock or dropping too low onto the pastern. The fastenings should be secure but shouldn't leave marks or indentations on the skin after removal, which would indicate they were too tight.

After riding, always remove boots promptly and check the leg for heat, swelling, or rub marks. Boots that fit well shouldn't cause any of these issues. It's also important to make sure the inside of the boot is clean and dry before each use.
