What are the signs of a healthy sheep?
A healthy sheep is alert, active, and responsive to its environment. It should have bright, clear eyes with no discharge, clean nostrils, and an even, steady gait with no signs of limping. Its coat or fleece should be intact and free from excessive matting, parasites, or bare patches. Healthy sheep graze and ruminate regularly, maintain consistent body condition, and show no signs of labored breathing. Fecal pellets should be firm and well-formed, and the animal should urinate normally. Body temperature should fall within the normal range of 101.5–104°F (38.6–40°C), and the sheep should socialize and move with the flock without isolating itself.
What are the signs that a sheep is sick?
A sick sheep will often separate itself from the flock, which is one of the earliest and most reliable warning signs. Other signs include loss of appetite, lethargy, labored or rapid breathing, nasal discharge, cloudy or sunken eyes, excessive coughing, bloating, diarrhea or abnormally soft/discolored feces, and grinding of teeth. Limping, swollen joints, or unwillingness to bear weight may indicate foot rot or joint infections. Pale gums and eyelid membranes can signal anemia, often caused by heavy worm burdens. A fever above 104°F or hypothermia below 100°F is also a red flag, and any significant change in normal behavior warrants close observation or veterinary attention.
