What are western cinches for?
A western cinch is the band that passes under the horse's belly and attaches to the saddle's rigging on both sides, serving the essential purpose of securing the western saddle firmly in place during riding. A well-fitted cinch distributes girth pressure evenly across the horse's barrel to prevent pinching, sores, and girth galls, and contributes to overall saddle balance and stability during lateral movements, steep terrain, and high-intensity disciplines like barrel racing and roping.
What are western cinches made of?
Western cinches are often made of different materials such as Mohair or wool string which are among the most traditional and widely recommended; neoprene; Nylon or synthetic; Leather; and hybrid materials such as a combination of the aforementioned materials.
How to measure the right western cinch size?
With the saddle positioned correctly on the horse's back without a cinch attached, measure from the center dee ring on one side of the saddle, down and under the horse's belly, and up to the center dee ring on the opposite side using a soft measuring tape. Divide this total measurement in half to determine the approximate cinch length needed, as cinches are measured from ring to ring across their total length. As a general guideline, the cinch buckles should sit approximately four finger widths behind the horse's elbow on both sides when properly tightened, ensuring the cinch sits in the natural girth groove without sitting too far forward onto the elbow or too far back onto the soft flank area. Most average-sized horses require a cinch between 28 and 34 inches, with smaller horses and ponies needing shorter cinches and larger warmbloods or draft crosses requiring longer ones.
What are the different types of western cinches?
- Single cinches are the standard configuration used with most everyday western saddles, consisting of one cinch positioned in the front cinch position to secure the saddle.
- Double cinches or back cinches add a second, looser cinch behind the front cinch that helps prevent the back of the saddle from lifting during roping, steep terrain riding, and barrel racing.
- Roping cinches are heavy-duty, wider cinches constructed from reinforced materials designed to withstand the significant forces generated during roping work without shifting or causing pressure sores.
- Barrel racing cinches are typically contoured or shaped cinches that allow maximum freedom of movement through the girth area during tight, high-speed turns.
- Mohair string cinches are widely considered the gold standard for skin-friendly everyday riding due to their exceptional breathability and moisture management properties.
- Felt cinches offer a wide, soft contact surface that distributes pressure broadly and gently, making them popular for horses with sensitive skin or girth sore tendencies.
