Top 3 Christmas Pet Safety Tips

Christmas dog

It's Christmas Eve, and we all like to include our pets in the holiday festivities. But it's also important to make sure they are safe, healthy, and sticking to their normal routine wherever possible. Avoiding tempting decorations, toxic plants and other seasonal dangers is equally crucial. Here are some ways to ensure pet safety in your home this season.

Secure your Christmas Tree

Cats and dogs love to play with Christmas trees and their decorations. Make sure you anchor your tree securely so it doesn't tip over onto your pet, even when batted or climbed. If you use a live tree, this will also prevent the water from spilling, especially if it contains poisonous fertilizers. Change your tree water often too, because stagnant water is a notorious breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

Avoid Tinsel

Yes, your cat or dog will love the sparkly silver decor that you string on your tree. It sparkles in the light and is fun to play with and carry around. But swallowing tinsel can cause your pet's digestive tract to become obstructed or promote vomiting and dehydration. Avoiding tinsel is the best bet when you have pets.

Hide the Treats

If you leave out chocolates, which are dangerous to pets, or your holiday feast, chances are your pet will get into it and could end up getting sick. Keep them away from the table, cover up unattended platters of food, put the treats our of reach, and secure the lids on your garbage cans.
