Lactulose Solution is an effective treatment for constipation, promoting laxation and increasing the number of bowel movements. This prescription-only synthetic disaccharide solution works as a colonic acidifier and is suitable for oral administration.

Directions:

The usual dose is 1 to 2 tablespoonfuls (15 to 30 mL, containing 10 g to 20 g of lactulose) daily. The dose may be increased to 60 mL daily if necessary. It may take 24-48 hours to produce a normal bowel movement. For better taste, the solution can be mixed with fruit juice, water, or milk.

Cautions and Warnings:

Lactulose contains galactose and lactose and should be used with caution in diabetics. It is contraindicated in patients on a low-galactose diet. Patients undergoing electrocautery procedures during proctoscopy or colonoscopy should have thorough bowel cleansing with a non-fermentable solution due to a theoretical hazard of explosive reactions.

If unusual diarrhea occurs, consult your physician. Elderly or debilitated patients using this medication for more than six months should have periodic serum electrolyte monitoring. Adverse effects may include flatulence, intestinal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Overdosage may lead to diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Use during pregnancy or nursing should be considered only if clearly needed, as safety in these conditions has not been fully established.
