Novox (Carprofen) for Dogs

Novox is the Vedco brand name for generic carprofen and a generic equivalent to Rimadyl. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs. It can also reduce fever. It inhibits the production of prostaglandins in cells, so they produce fewer chemicals that trigger inflammation and stiffness. This is why it is useful for dogs suffering from arthritis and other joint diseases. Give this medication with food, or alone, but giving the medication with food may reduce the chances of any stomach problems. Store at room temperature; never expose it to high heat.

What questions should I ask my veterinarian when discussing Novox?

  • What examinations and tests will be necessary when my pet’s taking Novox?
  • How long will treatment last?
  • When should I start noticing results?
  • What other treatment options do I have?

What questions should my veterinarian ask me?

  • Does your dog have a history of stomach ulcers or other stomach-related issues?
  • Does your dog have any allergies, to your knowledge?
  • Is your dog currently on any other medications?
  • Does your dog have any heart, kidney, or liver problems?

Possible Side Effects

  • It is considered safe to use in the vast majority of dogs, and the risk of side effects occurring appears to be less than 1%. Rarely, serious side effects and sometimes death have been reported.
  • The most common side effects are decreased appetite, vomiting (including blood in the vomit), diarrhea, or blood in the stool. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these.
  • This medication may effect the kidneys or the liver. Contact your veterinarian if you notice changes in water intake or urinary habits, or yellowing of the gums, skin or in the white of the eyes.
  • Immediately contact your veterinarian if your dog becomes lethargic, uncoordinated, has seizures, or exhibits changes in behavior.

Cautions and Warnings

  • The exact effect Novox has on pregnant, lactating, and breeding dogs is not known.
  • It has the potential to interact with other drugs. Let your veterinarian know about any other medications your dog is on, including vitamins, supplements, steroids, anticoagulants, and antidiabetic drugs.
  • Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions when it comes to administering this medication.
  • If a dose is missed, consult your veterinarian first, but some suggestions are, once a day, give it within 12 hours of the missed dose, twice a day, give it as soon as you remember or with the next dose.
  • Use this drug cautiously, or not at all, if your animal has active stomach or gastrointestinal ulcers, or has had these kinds of ulcers in the past as this may make these ulcers reappear or worsen.
  • If your dog has had heart, kidney, or liver problems, speak with your veterinarian about the risks of giving your dog this medication.
