Rx Doxycycline Hyclate Tablets
Doxycycline Hyclate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that treats a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, and kennel cough. It might also help with urinary tract, respiratory tract and wound infections. It may be used in conjunction with heartworm treatments. Benefits dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and other small animals.
Directions/Dosage
Follow the directions for dosing and administration from your veterinarian. The full course of treatment should be given even if your pet appears to be feeling better.
Ingredients
Each tablet for oral administration contains doxycycline hyclate equivalent to 100 mg of doxycycline (anhydrous).
Inactive ingredients: Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Corn Starch, Croscarmellose Sodium, Docusate Sodium, Magnesium Stearate, and Microcrystalline Cellulose. Film Coating and Polishing contains: FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Yellow No. 6, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Polyethylene Glycol, and Titanium Dioxide.
Possible Side Effects
May cause nausea and vomiting. Contact your veterinarian if you observe any of these effects in your pet. May cause photosensitivity, with pustules or blisters on skin exposed to the sun. Long-term therapy may result in the growth of unwanted bacteria or fungi. May stain teeth in immature animals, but other tetracyclines are more apt to do this. An allergic reaction to this medication can occur, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you observe any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Cautions and Warnings
- For cats especially, give a teaspoon of water after administering the pill, or the medication may cause damage to the esophagus. Alternatively, offer your cat water flavored with tuna water or other liquids likes.
- Do not Give during the first half of pregnancy. It can slow the growth, alter the skelton, and yellow the teeth of unborn animals. Give only during the second half of pregnancy if benefits outweigh the risks.
- Consult your veterinarian before using with vitamins and supplements, oral antacids, minerals (especially iron), Pepto-Bismol, or Kaopectate digoxin, theophylline (bronchial dilator), warfarin and insulin, as interactions may occur.
- May cause false urine glucose results.
- Keep out of reach of children and animals.
