Product Description

Schirmer Tear Test

A diagnostic test to measure the rate of tear production in the eyes. Used in the evaluation of conjunctivitis to diagnose tear deficiency as a contributing factor to ocular surface diseases and to assess lacrimal gland function prior to cataract surgery.

CAUTIONS/WARNINGS:
The Schirmer Tear Tests are intended for single patient use only. Contents are sterile if package is unopened and undamaged. Do not use if package has been previously opened.

DIRECTIONS:
The Schirmer Tear Test is indicated to measure the rate of tear production. It should be used in the evaluation of conjunctivitis to diagnose tear deficiency as a contributing factor to ocular surface diseases including: Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, Pigmentary keratitis, indolent corneal ulcers, exposure keratitis, and others. In addition, it should be used to assess lacrimal gland function prior to cataract surgery.
The tear test is performed with standardized sterile 5x35mm strips. In veterinary species, the test is performed for 60 seconds. The standardized test (Schirmer I) should be performed before installation of any topical medication or manipulation of the eyelids. Topical anesthesia is not used to perform the standardized STT. Avoid touching the ocular end of the strip with fingers. Although copious discharge present on the surface of the eye may be removed with a gauze sponge prior to performing the STT, it is not necessary to do so.
Hook the rounded notched end of the sterile strip over the juncture of the temporal and middle thirds of the lower lid margin. Note the time. The eyelids can be held shut or the patient can be allowed to keep its eyes open and blink freely during the Schirmer test. After 60 seconds have elapsed, remove the strip and immediately measure the length of the moistened area. Immediate evaluation is important because, as with all Schirmer tear test strips, the tear front will continue advancing a few millimeters after it has been removed from the eye. Visualization of the length of wetting of the paper strip is aided by blue dye that advances with the tear front. A millimeter scale is printed on each strip.
