Have you joined the Pokémon GO craze? We’re sure you’ve seen an increase of millennials venturing outside, eyes glued to their phones, gathering in groups, and occasionally shouting, “POKÉMON!” Pokémon GO is inspired by the animated series Pokémon, a fantasy world where humans could catch Pokémon and battle other people’s Pokémon to become the ultimate Pokémon Master.

The free mobile game brought this fantasy world to reality.  The cute creatures pop out at random intervals on your walk and it’s your job as a Pokémon trainer to catch them. If you’re experiencing the fun of Pokémon GO, why not take your dog out for extra exercise while searching for Pikachu? Here are some extra tips to ensure you and pet become the best Pokémon trainers and catch ’em all!

1. Know your surroundings

Pokémon GO can be great exercise for you and your pet! It’s important to remain observant of your surroundings and watch where you’re walking. When walking, it’s okay to put your phone away as the game will vibrate your phone when a Pokémon is nearby. Stay away from busy streets and highways.  A dependable collar and leash or harness would be useful to make sure your furry friend is safe and secure.

2. Know your dog’s limits

Catching Pokémon can be tiring for your pets after a while! Some breeds are not adept to strenuous physical activity while others could go on for hours.  Make sure you pay attention to your pet’s health conditions to ensure they are properly hydrated while on the go. A portable water bottle will come in handy if you will be outside for more than 20 minutes.

3. Travel to dog-friendly areas

Some areas prohibit dogs from entering. Make sure to plan ahead in deciding where you and your furry friend will be traveling to. Dog parks are an excellent area to take your dogs while playing Pokémon GO. If you’re in town, make sure to also stop by Jeffers’ retail store to catch Pokémon and give your dog a special treat!

4. Save battery

Whether you’re out on a fun walk with your dog or trying to claim a gym there are several to conserve your phone’s battery.  When capturing Pokémon, the app automatically uses AR ( augmented reality), which simulates the real-world environment and can significantly drain phone battery. By turning off the AR, which is located in the top right corner, you can save a significant amount of energy. In doing so, the majority of your focus will be on walking your pet and not on your smart phone’s battery life!

5. Visit PokéStops

PokéStops are places where you can collect more PokéBalls and other related items. PokéStops are usually marked as public art installations, landmarks, monuments, and historical markers. Make a trip to your town hall to see what you find!

6. Backyard Fun

Incense will attract wild Pokémon to your location for a limited amount of time. This way your dog can roam freely and safely in the yard while you catch Pokémon.

7. A tired dog is a happy dog

Don’t forget to reward your pet with a dog treat for all their help in catching Pokémon! Playing Pokémon Go is suitable for all ages and can be a great exercise for you and your pet. The most important tip is to always be mindful of your surroundings. The next time you go out to catch Pokémon, bring your pet with you!
